As part of the natural cycle of life, a living thing dies while another one is born. That is just how things go and nobody can change that fact. We should all accept the inevitability of death coming for us at one time or another. Although there are instances when a person has a ‘close call’ with death; death will eventually come to this person at a later date. If death happens, it is in its finality and nothing ever can change it.

A person’s body is like a machine that needs proper maintenance in order to become productive and to function properly. Also like a machine, a person’s body will become worn out due to old age even if the person has taken good care of it. Eventually, a person’s body organs will stop working due to the wear and tear that they have accumulated throughout the years. When these organs stop functioning, the person will die. This death is known as dying from old age.

Although the organs of the body will stop functioning properly as a person ages, there are many advancements in medical technology that makes it possible for people to live longer. It is a fact that the life expectancy of a person has increased significantly since the medieval ages. A large number of people are now living way over their 70s and there are a number of people who have been known to live over a 100 years. Vaccines have been developed to prevent diseases and a lot of researches have been made to improve the way that people live their lives. However, there are still diseases that have no known cure and may become fatal to persons that catch it.

Ideally, people who are much older and have lived a full life should die earlier. An elderly who dies of old age will have had lived his/her life to the fullest and because of this; his/her relatives will not be as grief-stricken as they ought to be because they are already prepared for his/her death. However, there are times when even the younger people die earlier. Events such as war between two territories will often recruit younger citizens as combatants and more often than not, these wars will claim the lives of many young citizens. The Vietnam War is an example of an event in which thousands of young men died earlier than their parents.

Accidents are also a common cause of death. When a younger person dies before everyone else, a lot of mixed emotions may be experienced by that person’s family or friends. Parents of the deceased will feel the most grief because it is always a parent’s worst nightmare to bury his/her child. Parents who lose a child through death may feel guilty that they did not do their best to protect their child from whatever took their child’s life.

Friends of the young deceased may also feel a lot of mixed emotions. They might, in their young minds, already think about death and mortality and may feel traumatized by the death of their friend especially if their friend died suddenly due to a disease or an accident. Young people who have experienced a death of a close friend may also lose faith in their religion asking why a bad thing such as death can happen to their young friend. Because of this, they may resent going to church or religious services. If this happens, parents of children who lost a friend due to death must make sure that they talk to their children about what happened and make sure that their children accept and understand the situation.

It is hard to lose a person because of death. It is especially harder if that person is still young and has a lot of potential and opportunities going on for him/her. However, if death occurs, there is nothing that can be done about it and people must accept the loss and make preparations for the funeral and memorial services of the deceased.
